The kidneys' main function is to filter waste and excess fluid from the blood, which is then excreted as urine. They also play a crucial role in maintaining the body's water and electrolyte balance, regulating blood pressure, and producing hormones.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a significant public health concern in Africa, with varying prevalence rates across the continent. A major challenge is the high burden of CKD of unknown etiology (CKDu), particularly in certain regions. The causes of CKD in Africa are multifactorial, including hypertension, diabetes, glomerulonephritis, and HIV infection, often exacerbated by genetic factors like the APOL1 gene variants.
